Zimbabwe Civic groups threatened by security Agents

Harare-Zimbabwe’s civic society says will engage donors sponsoring the country’s constitution making process to withdraw funds because they are being threatened by state security for conducting public awareness campaigns.

Addressing a media briefing in Harare National Association for Non Governmental Organisations (NANGO)Chief Executive Cephas Zinhumwe said they were forced to engage the international community sponsoring the Constitution making process because the civic society was being persecuted from participating from the process.

Last week members of the civic society including ZimRights officials, Crisis Coalition of Zimbabwe and GAPWUZ officials received series of text messages warning them against pursuing their mandate of conducting civic education in rural areas on the constitution making.

Some of the massages the civic organizations received from some Telecel phone number 0733 193 547 which they say is now not reachable read “If we give you a task to ask your ZimRights colleagues to you to slow down and forget your constitution making process will you do that or else…?,and Are you turning ZimRights into a political party? What is the motive of your donors and who are they?

“We are going to write to UNDP and other donors in the constitution making process informing them that we are being threatened to death for participating in the process they are funding.

We want them to know that the entire civic society is being sidelined from the process they should be contributing to, “he told journalists.

The civic society said they were not going to stop their civic education because of the threats from the state security.

“We remain committed to full filling our mandates and we will not be deterred by forces that are working to rob Zimbabweans of their right to enjoy and celebrate their humanity.

We urge the Inclusive government and in particular the Co-Home Affairs ministers and the police commissioner to unequivocally guarantee the safety of all these human rights defenders and to ensure them their security pending full investigations into the allegations, “they said.
